The compressive strength of stone is given in N/mm². The preferred compressive strength classes of sand-lime brick are 12 and 20; they are also available upon request in class 28.

The compressive strength class is the critical parameter for the bearing capacity of masonry construction. The base value of allowable compressive stress is derived in conjunction with the type of cement used.
